The name of our continent comes from the Greek mythology. Europa is the name of a mythical daughter of Agenor, king of Tyre. Zeus, captivated by the girl’s beauty, fell madly in love and kidnapped her. Then, he took her to Greece’s largest island – Crete.
So, why was her name
used to call our continent? No one really knows. What we do know, however, is
that the name “Europa” comes either from the Greek word “europos”, meaning
something like “gently rising” or from an Assyrian word “ereb” meaning “the
west” or “the place where the sun sets”.
We’re going to start now a virtual tour to the beginnings of our
continent. You will learn where its name comes from and what myth tells this
story, you will also have a chance to share your experiences and knowledge with
the rest of your class.
